(Warm the Channels [or Menses] Decoction)

This formula comes from Zhang Zhong-jing’s late Han dynasty Jin Kui Yao Lue (Essentials from the Golden Caninet [or Coffer]). Our version is a 10:1 powdered extract in 500mg gelatin capsules.

Ingredients:

Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Evodiae)
Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi)
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)
Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong)
Bai Shao (Radix Alba Paeoniae)
E Jiao (Gelatinum Corii Asini)
Mai Men Dong (Tuber Ophiopgonis)
Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moudan)
Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsis)
Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae)
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae)
Sheng Jiang (uncooked Rhizoma Zingiberis)

Functions
Warms the menses and scatters cold, supplements and nourishes the qi and blood, quickens the blood

Indications
Chong and ren vacuity cold with blockage and obstruction due to blood stasis resulting in enduring uterine bleeding, including abnormally long menstruation and mid-cycle bleeding, irregular menstruation (either early or delayed), dysmenorrhea, infertility, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), peri- and menopausal syndrome

Note: Chong and ren vacuity cold in this case is a synonym for qi and blood, yin and yang vacuity.

Formula explanation
Within this formula, Dang Shen, Ban Xia, Gan Cao, and Sheng Jiang fortify the spleen and supplement the qi. Ban Xia and Sheng Jiang also rectify the qi, eliminate dampness, and transform phlegm should those principles also be necessary. Further, Gan Cao harmonizes all the other ingredients in the formula. Dang Gui, Mai Men Dong, E Jiao, and Bai Shao nourish the blood and enrich yin. Wu Zhu Yu and Gui Zhi warm the menses and scatter cold. Chuan Xiong and Mu Dan Pi quicken the blood and dispel stasis.

Dosage
Three capsules two times per day equal not less than 30 grams of bulk medicinals. However, because our extraction process is so much more efficient than stovetop decoction, we believe this amount of extract is actually more like the equivalent of 45-60 grams of bulk-dispensed herbs.
