Formula Rationale

Hepatoplex One is designed to treat acute and chronic hepatitis symptoms, particularly those associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Its Chinese therapeutic actions are to regulate the qi and invigorate the blood: tonify the qi, kidney, and spleen: clear damp-heat and heat-toxin: and aid digestion. The chief ingredient is schizandra (wu wei zi), an astringent herb that tonifies qi and the kidney. In a Chinese study, schizandra was found to lower liver enzyme levels in 72 percent of 102 patients over an average of 25 days. Health Concerns uses a special extraction technique used in Chinese studies. Astragalus (huang qi) is a fu zheng (“supporting the normal qi”) herb that tonifies the spleen qi. Research shows that astragalus has cell-mediated and humoral immune restoration capabilities. Herbs that clear heat and toxin as well as damp heat are also important in the formula. Gardenia (zhi zi) is traditionally been used for jaundice and stimulating bile secretion. Forsythia (lian qiao) clears heat and toxin. Persica (tao ren), red peony (chi shao), and salvia (dan shen) regulate the blood and help repair liver damage. Ginger (gan jiang) aids digestion; research has shown ginger to have anti-viral effects as well. Licorice (gan cao) is added to harmonize the formula. It must be specially prepared in order to have this effect.

Clinical Notes

Best results are obtained by gradually reducing the use of this formula in order for the enzymes
to avoid rebounding
