FORMULA EXPLANATION:

In Chinese medicine, bed-wetting or enuresis is seen as a problem with water fluids, and the three viscera which control the movement and transformation of water fluids are the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. The spleen does not mature until approximately six years of age, and the kidneys do not become exuberant until puberty. Therefore, it is extremely common for children to suffer from a spleen-kidney dual vacuity. However, if there is a spleen vacuity, there is typically also a lung vacuity since the lungs receive their qi from the spleen. When bed-wetting is due to a lung, spleen, kidney vacuity, spleen vacuity fails to upbear the clear. Thus too many fluids seep downward from the middle to the lower burner, while kidney qi vacuity fails to secure and astringe and thus to close and seal the front yin or urethra. Because the spleen is the latter heaven root and the kidneys are the former heaven root and former and latter heavens mutually bolster and support each other, this formula is still appropriate even if a child only presents a spleen-lung qi vacuity or a kidney qi vacuity. Within this formula, Huang Qi, Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, and mix-fried Gan Cao fortify the spleen and boost the qi. Chai Hu and Sheng Ma disinhibit the qi mechanism and upbear the clear, while Chen Pi disinhibits the qi mechanism, downbears the turbid, and transforms phlegm. Yi Zhi Ren, Sha Yuan Zi, Qian Shi, and Lian Zi all supplement the kidneys and secure and astringe. In addition, Yi Zhi Ren warms the spleen, Qian Shi fortifies the spleen, and Lian Zi supplements the spleen, therefore further tying together the kidneys and spleen. Shi Chang Pu is added to transform phlegm, open the orifices, and arouse the spirit in order to help children who sleep too soundly and have a hard time waking. Finally, Dang Gui is in the formula to help supplement the qi based on the principle that, “The blood is the mother of the qi.”
